Understanding Getaround Connect

What is Getaround Connect?

Getaround Connect is a telematics device, installed directly into the car which allows for "self-service" rentals, where you don’t have to meet the driver to exchange keys.

The Connect device is connected to the car’s immobilizer and central lock, allowing the car to be locked and unlocked from the Getaround app.

It is linked to the car's own onboard computer, allowing the Connect device to record the miles/KM driven between unlock/lock events, and, where eligible, record the fuel level at these events.

Is Getaround Connect the right fit for me?

Getaround Connect is designed to make car rentals seamless for both peer and professional owners who want to share their vehicles regularly and for extended periods to maximize earnings. It's especially effective in high-demand areas like major cities, tourist hotspots, train stations, and airports, offering 24/7 availability of your car—even when you're not around.

However, Getaround Connect is currently available only in select locations and may require installation fees. You can find more details about the installation process and associated costs here.

If you're looking to share your car occasionally for extra income, key exchange might be a better fit. It's an easy, flexible, and low-commitment way to get started, especially in areas with less demand. Plus, there are no installation fees or subscription costs involved.

Can I still use my car as I usually do?

Of course ! When not rented, you can use your car normally (with the keys).

You only have to lock and unlock your car with your smartphone before and after each rental :

• Before a rental, leave the car keys in the glovebox and lock it with your app
• After a rental, unlock your car with your app and then get your keys back. You can then open, close and lock your car normally with the keys, until the next rental.

If someone wants to steal my car, can they start it with the keys?

The Getaround Connect technology is designed to allow the sharing of your car without having to meet in person to exchange the key. Your car is locked by the driver using the app and Getaround Connect technology after each rental, and then unlocked by the next driver via the Getaround app.

The Getaround Connect technology includes an immobilizer, aimed at slowing down a potential thief as much as possible. It does not however guarantee protection against theft. When your car is locked via the Getaround app, the immobilizer is automatically activated. This means that if someone opens your car without using the Getaround Connect technology, the immobilizer remains active. In this case, even if the keys were accessible, the car would not start.

Furthermore, with the Getaround Connect device, you can track the location of your car at any time outside of rentals.

Can I rent with and without Getaround Connect at the same time?

Yes, it’s possible. Go to Your Rentals > Click on your rental > Switch to a standard rental agreement.

However, we’re sure when you try Getaround Connect rentals, you won’t switch back to classic rentals !

How does the Getaround Connect subscription work?

In Germany, Austria, & Spain:

The Getaround Connect subscription costs 19€ per month (including VAT) for each equipped car. You’ll make a profit from your very first rental.

In France & Belgium:

The Getaround Connect subscription costs 25€ per month (including VAT) for each equipped car. You’ll make a profit from your very first rental.

In Norway:

The Getaround Connect subscription costs 290kr per month (including VAT) for each equipped car. You’ll make a profit from your very first rental.

In Spain:

For your first equipped car, the first 1 month of the subscription is free in order to give you a hassle-free introduction to Getaround Connect. (Please note that this offer is available only for private owners.)

All countries:

There is no minimum duration for the subscription: it will be cancelled as soon as the Getaround Connect device is removed from your car. This article explains the procedure.

The amount of the subscription will be automatically charged on your credit card.

NB: the subscription fee is due for each month that has started. If you uninstall the device in the middle of the month you will be refunded for the unused time.
